A fire broke out at a Yangon porridge shop owned by U Sein Khat near the southern entrance of Shwe Myin Wun Pagoda in downtown Myawaddy, on the Myanmar-Thai border, at around 8:30 am. on September 5. Four people, including three family members, were injured.

Upon receiving the report, the Myawaddy Fire Department, led by Chief Fire Officer U Phyo Min Zaw and Reserve Fire Brigade Commander U Aung Soe, responded with five fire engines and water tankers. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within 15 minutes.

The injured, including three family members and a man who tried to put out the flames, sustained burns and were taken to Myawaddy Hospital with the help of the Z-Rescue Social Aid Society. Investigations revealed that the fire started when a gas cooker exploded in the back kitchen, spreading quickly to the second floor and the adjacent Daw Ni-Nimvan General Store. Officials noted that the flames intensified due to fuel stored upstairs, and a short circuit from solar panels worsened the situation.

Shop owner U Sein Khat has been summoned to Myawaddy Police Station for questioning and possible charges related to negligence in handling fire.
