Mr. Osman Hashim, former Malaysian diplomat and the current ASEAN Special Envoy on Myanmar, has reportedly arrived in the country on August 17.

The National Defense and Security Council’s Information Team has not issued any announcement regarding his visit.

Reports indicate that an ASEAN delegation led by the Malaysian Foreign Minister, with the participation of foreign ministers from Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, is scheduled to visit Myanmar in the third week of September 2025. Osman Hashim’s arrival in Nay Pyi Taw is believed to precede this planned mission.

It was previously reported in some exile media that Osman Hashim visited Nay Pyi Taw on February 6, 2025, though no official statement was released by the State Administration Council’s Information Team.

Following that visit, on February 7 and 8, the ASEAN Special Envoy met in Bangkok with representatives from the National Unity Government (NUG), Karen National Union (KNU), Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), and Chin National Front (CNF).

BBC News has also reported that Osman Hashim is currently in Myanmar from August 17 to 20. The report noted that it was unclear which officials he has met with but indicated that he is expected to hold discussions with ethnic armed groups that are signatories to the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA).

Earlier in 2025, a high-level ASEAN delegation on earthquake relief, led by Malaysia’s Foreign Minister H.E. Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Haji Hasan in his capacity as ASEAN Chair, together with Thai Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, visited Nay Pyi Taw in April. At that time, they met and held talks with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council and Prime Minister of Myanmar.

Osman Hashim, a veteran diplomat and former Secretary-General of the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was appointed as ASEAN Special Envoy on Myanmar on January 19, 2025. He is the fifth envoy to be appointed by ASEAN since 2021.
