Since August 4, heavy rainfall in Thantaunggyi Township, Kayin State, has caused streams to overflow, leading to floods, landslides, and infrastructure damage. As of August 9, landslides in the area have killed 13 people, with others still missing. Road and bridge damage has cut off transportation and communication links, according to local residents.
A local source reported that between August 5 and 9, the landslides claimed 13 lives and injured several people. “Due to flooding and landslides, all roads and bridges have been destroyed, and in some villages in Thantaunggyi Township, even motorcycles can no longer pass,” the source said.
One of the worst-hit areas is Lower Htipukhi Village, about 15 miles from Thantaunggyi town, where massive landslides destroyed numerous houses and damaged large sections of farmland. Residents have been forced to live in temporary shelters and are facing urgent needs for food, medicine, and rehabilitation support.
Locals say urgent rescue and relief operations are needed in Thantaunggyi Township, where communities are still at risk.
The heavy rains since August 4 have caused landslides that damaged at least 30 houses, along with bridges linking villages, severing road access.
Earlier, on July 29, heavy rains triggered a landslide on Thantaunggyi Mountain that damaged four houses, though no casualties were reported at that time.
