A baby elephant named Kyaw Pale, who had been injured after being accidentally stepped on by its mother, has died, according to Wingabaw Elephant Camp.
Kyaw Pale, who was just over eight months old, sustained the fatal injury on the night of May 3, 2025.
“At around midnight on May 3, the caretakers, veterinarians, and mahouts rushed over after hearing the baby elephant’s cries and dogs barking. The mother elephant, startled by the dogs’ sudden barking while she was resting, instinctively moved to protect her calves. In doing so, she accidentally stepped heavily on Kyaw Pule, who had been sleeping near her, injuring his hip and back area. Although the initial injury seemed minor, Kyaw Pule later became unable to move and his condition worsened,” the camp explained.
After more than two months of struggling, Kyaw Pale passed away at 5:30 a.m. on July 6, 2025.
“A post-mortem examination found dislocation in the spine and pelvis area, and pressure on the spinal nerves, which ultimately led to his death,” the camp reported.
Kyaw Pale had been born to his mother through natural breeding. His surviving sibling is a female calf named Pale Sint.
The baby elephant was buried on July 7, and the camp is planning to build a small memorial stupa in his memory. Additionally, a merit-making ceremony in Kyaw Pale’s honor is scheduled to be held at the camp on July 12.
