The Mandalay Region Police Force reported that thieves stole gold jewelry and cash worth over 400 million kyats from the home of residents who had temporarily relocated due to earthquake safety concerns. The suspects have since been arrested.
The victims, Daw Khin Phyu Myint and her older sister, live in a ground-floor apartment on 32B Street between 70th and 71st Streets in Chanayetharzan Township's Yan Myo Lone neighborhood. Fearing structural damage from recent earthquakes, they had moved to sleep in another apartment across the street. Meanwhile, their gold jewelry and around 200 million kyats in cash—stored in a sack on the mezzanine level—were stolen.
After the victims filed a complaint at No. (3) Police Station regarding the missing valuables (totaling over 430 million kyats), investigators discovered that a worker from an adjacent construction site had disappeared around the same time. The suspect, Lwin Ko Oo was later arrested in Letpan Village, Tatkon Township, along with accomplices who helped conceal the stolen goods.
A police official stated: "The thieves entered through the window of the ground-floor apartment and took the sack of valuables from the mezzanine. This case highlights the risks for displaced residents during seismic events. The perpetrator, a construction worker from the neighbouring site, had existing criminal ties."
