China has announced it will provide an additional 1 billion yuan in emergency humanitarian aid to Myanmar at the request of the Myanmar government, the Chinese Embassy in Yangon confirmed.
The aid package will include fuel, prefabricated plank houses, operating rooms, essential medicines, and vaccines. China will also dispatch health and disease prevention experts to carry out treatment and disinfection operations, as well as send disaster assessment teams to evaluate the situation in the earthquake-affected regions. These teams will assist Myanmar in developing long-term disaster prevention and risk reduction strategies.
In addition, cultural heritage and structural inspection teams will assess damage to ancient heritage sites and buildings, with plans to conduct structural strength tests and begin renovation work where needed.
Mr. Li Ming, spokesperson for the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), stated on April 10 that Myanmar's earthquake relief efforts have now entered the phase of epidemic prevention and rehabilitation.
Following the devastating earthquake on March 28, the Chinese government had previously provided 100 million yuan worth of initial emergency aid. Chinese rescue teams — including the China International Rescue Team and the Hong Kong SAR Rescue Team — concluded their mission and returned on April 9. During their deployment, they rescued nine survivors, including a pregnant woman, and recovered the bodies of 59 victims.
The teams also inspected over 287,000 square meters of homes and critical infrastructure and provided health services to more than 2,000 affected individuals. Supplies delivered by special aircraft included 4,000 tents, 10,000 blankets, over 55,000 emergency medical kits, 40,000 mosquito nets, 18,000 tarpaulins, 4,000 sleeping bags, 10,000 solar lamps, 2,000 sets of cooking utensils, and 2,000 packets of instant noodles, according to the Chinese Embassy.
