The Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok has announced that children born to Myanmar parents residing in Thailand can now be registered at the embassy.
Under Section 10 of Myanmar’s 1982 Citizenship Law, children born to two Myanmar parents in Thailand can have their births registered within one year of the birth date at the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok or the Myanmar Consulate in Chiang Mai.
To complete the registration, parents must provide a translated copy of the child’s birth certificate in English and submit it within one year of the birth date.
Additional required documents include copies of both parents' Myanmar passports, national registration cards, an application form, and a declaration form signed by the parents.
Consular officers will verify the documents in accordance with standard procedures and forward them to the relevant authorities in Myanmar for approval.
This process includes registering the child’s birth abroad and adding the child's name to the parents’ citizenship certificate.
For families wishing to continue living in Thailand, a Myanmar passport for the child (referred to as a "birth registration passport") can be applied for at either the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok or the Consulate in Chiang Mai.
The embassy has noted that the issuance of such passports requires approval from Myanmar’s passport office and may take approximately four months.
Alternatively, if parents choose not to apply for a new passport and wish to return to Myanmar with the child, a one-time travel certificate can be requested.
If only one parent accompanies the child to Myanmar, a declaration from the other parent affirming no objection is required. Application forms for these services are available free of charge at the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok.
