Monk arrested for beating novice to death over alleged phone theft in Pyapon District

An incident occurred in Daw Nyein Village, Amar Town, Pyapon District, Ayeyawady Region, where a monk allegedly beat a novice, his roommate, to death with a stick, accusing him of stealing a phone. Authorities have arrested the monk responsible for the crime.

According to a source involved in the investigation, the incident took place at the Thayettaw Monastery in Daw Nyein Village. On September 18, officials conducted an inspection after receiving a report that a novice had died due to injuries inflicted by his roommate monk.

“We received the report on September 18. The village administrator informed us that a novice had died from injuries at Thayettaw Monastery in Daw Nyein Village. When we arrived, we found the boy had severe bruises and injuries on his back, legs, and hips. His body was sent to Daw Nyein Township Hospital. After notifying the boy’s father, we filed a case, and the monk responsible was defrocked and arrested. The boy was allegedly beaten with two green bamboo sticks by the monk, who accused him of stealing another novice’s phone, leading to his death. The monk has been charged with murder under Penal Code Section 302," the investigator said.

The authorities have collected evidence related to the case, and the suspect has been charged under Penal Code Section 302 for murder.
