A devastating mountain torrent has destroyed houses and claimed lives in Kalaw due to rising water levels from continuous rainfall on the evening of September 10. Kalaw Creek overflowed, triggering severe flooding in the area.

"The rapid rise in water levels caught many off guard, particularly elderly women who were accustomed to annual flooding and did not evacuate in time. The floodwaters rose so fast that people had no chance to react. Power outages cut off phone lines, but some are now back in service. Food supplies are scarce as most shops are submerged, but we are helping each other, and road clearing efforts have begun," wrote Thin Zar Htet on social media, sharing the situation in Kalaw.

Photos shared by local residents reveal the destruction of homes caused by water erosion. While local social organizations were contacted by the Daily Eleven newspaper, they have not yet been able to confirm the death toll.

U Nanda Hla Myint, a member of the Union Solidarity and Development Party, commented on social media, noting that while he had experienced floods in his youth, the current situation is the worst he has seen.

In addition to residential areas, local landmarks such as Mawmyay Oo Park, BEHS 1, the town hall, and roads including Taunggyi Road and Inpyin Road, have also been affected by the floods, according to reports from local residents.
