The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) announced that the water level of the Thanlwin River reached its danger level of 951 cm in Hpa-an township, Kayin State, yesterday morning.

This level exceeded the previous critical water level of 938 cm recorded on July 30, 2018, setting a new high record.

Currently, nearby wards in downtown Hpa-an are experiencing severe flooding, affecting thousands of locals.

“All roads leading in and out of Hpa-an township are flooded, and the current is very strong, making it difficult for small vehicles to move. As of the night of July 27, six flood relief camps were opened in downtown Hpa-an township. With the water level still rising, plans are underway to open more relief camps,” said one of the rescue workers.

Residents needing emergency assistance can contact local social organizations for help, according to the rescue worker.

Similarly, new wards located on the western bank of the Thanlwin River are also experiencing flooding, with relief camps being set up at Kyuseik monastery.

Yesterday morning, the Hpa-an–Mawlamyine road section was submerged, causing inconvenience for vehicles. Additionally, the Hpa-an–Eaindu road section was flooded, according to locals.
