Four arrested for theft of gold bar and foreign currencies worth over 150 m kyats in Yangon

Four male individuals have been apprehended along with evidence, including gold items and cash, for their involvement in three separate theft cases, including the theft of a gold bar and foreign currencies valued at over 150 million kyats in Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township, according to the Ministry of Information.

The incident occurred on June 11, 2024, at around 10:30 am, when a variety of gold items, including two gold bars, 31 types of gold jewelry, foreign currencies worth 8,180,550 kyats, and a total value of approximately 159,815,900 kyats were stolen from a travel bag in the bedroom of U Don Htet Shine, residing at No. 764, Zambu Thiri Road, Ward 77, Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township. A case (P) 307/2024 was opened under Section 380 of the Penal Code at the Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township Police Station.

Upon investigation, the suspects, Nga Yel (aka) Htet Oo (29) whose father is U Soe, of Ward 58, Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township, and Pyae Sone (aka) Kalar (29) whose father is U Win Tin of the same ward, were apprehended. Htet Oo was arrested in Myasein Village, Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyawady Region on June 14 at 6:30 pm, while Pyae Sone was captured at SKY KTV in Ward 26, Dagon Myothit (South) Township on June 15 at 11 pm.

Based on the statements of Htet Oo and Pyae Sone, authorities seized 188 pieces of 100-dollar bills, 32 coins from various countries which were not included in the report, six types of gold jewelry worth 6.9 million kyats, and 23.5 million kyats in Myanmar currency from the sale of the stolen dollar bills, as well as two mobile phones from their residences. The remaining evidence, including other stolen items and a suspect named Tun Tun Lin (under investigation) who facilitated the sale of the stolen goods, is still at large.

Further investigations into the apprehended suspects revealed their involvement in other criminal activities. Htet Oo (alias) Nga Yel, Pyae Sone (alias) Kula, and Hein Htet Zaw (alias) A Thay Lay were found to have stolen various gold items valued at approximately 19.7 million kyats from House No. 640, Ward 78, on February 26, 2024. Additionally, Htet Oo, Pyae Sone, and Chit Ko (alias) Lat Pwar were discovered to have stolen gold items valued at around 95,353,000 kyats from House No. 193/B, Zambu Thiri Road, Ward 6 (West), Thaketa Township.

Efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects led to the arrest of Hein Htet Zaw (alias) A Thay Lay (23) son of U Zaw Win of Ward 60, Dagon Myothit (South) Township, and Chit Ko (alias) Lat Pwar (22) son of U Pho Cho of Tadar Kyaung Village, Dala Township, on June 16. Additional evidence, including gold items weighing 5 kyattha and 11 pae worth 26.1 million kyats, was seized from their residences.

Upon further investigation, Htet Oo (alias) Nga Yel, Pyae Sone (alias) Kalar, Chit Ko (alias) Lat Pwar, and Hein Htet Zaw (alias) A Thay Lay were found to have stolen a gold-colored Vivo mobile phone from a house in Ward 77, Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township, in February 2024 and three other mobile phones from another house in the same ward in April 2024. Separate cases have been opened for each of these incidents.

In these incidents, evidence for three thefts and two attempted thefts was uncovered. The authorities are continuing their investigations to ensure that all suspects, including Htet Oo (alias) Nga Yel and at-large Tun Tun Lin (under investigation), are brought to justice. Law enforcement units are working diligently to apprehend the remaining suspect and recover the stolen items according to Ministry of Information.
