Myanmar's Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has reported a surge in record-breaking high temperatures across the country.

Dawei in Taninthayi Region shattered its 77-year high on March 29, reaching a scorching 39.5°C (103.1°F), surpassing the previous record of 39°C (102.2°F).

Similar stories unfolded in Pyapon, Mawlamyine, and Mudon, with each town setting new high temperatures within days of each other.

The DMH warns that these extreme temperatures are typical for Myanmar's spring season (March-May). This period sees gradually rising daytime temperatures, afternoon cloud formation, evening development of cloud mountains accompanied by strong winds, increased risk of scattered thunderstorms, lightning, and hail and gusty winds reaching 40-50 mph, potentially impacting land and water travel.

The DMH urges citizens to be vigilant throughout March, April, and May due to the potential for severe weather events. They advise staying informed about weather updates from the DMH and domestic flights and seafaring vessels taking precautions and staying informed about weather conditions.

While southern Myanmar experiences record heat, the DMH reports average March temperatures for the rest of the country during the third ten days (March 21-31).
