The rights of those who can vote will be taken seriously in the upcoming elections, said Major General Zaw Min Tun, the spokesperson of the State Administration Council (SAC) and Deputy Minister for Information.

On August 22, at a press conference held by the SAC information team at the office of the Ministry of Information in Nay Pyi Taw, Major General Zaw Min Tun responded to a reporter's question whether the election would be held only after the completion of the 2024 census.

"The Tatmadaw took responsible for the state because of electoral fraud. Therefore, whether it is about the ballot in the upcoming elections or about the rights of those who can vote, we will take serious action," he said.

Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun said that the list of eligible voters listed in the 2020 election was conducted independently of the 2014 census, causing electoral fraud.

Major General Zaw Min Tun said, "It is because of the list of those who have the right to vote. Regarding the list of those who have the right to vote, we compared the list released by the General Administration Department before the 2020 election, the list issued by the immigration office and the list published by the Union Election Commission. At that time we had the 2014 census. They did it with inflated ballots regardless of the 2014 census. There were frauds. So that we are making sure that there are no errors in the ballot list."

Major General Zaw Min Tun said that the census is conducted every 10 years according to global standards, and since Myanmar conducted the census in 2014, it is important to collect the census in 2024.

"Before the 2014 census, the population of our country was estimated. When we actually take the census, we see that the population is lower than the estimated population. In the past, it was the birth rate before we collected that. The birth rate of Myanmar was estimated to be more than one percent or two percent. We will know how much it is when we actually take the census. We learnt that it is about 0.85 per cent. Only after that census was conducted, there are people who have gone abroad for various reasons, and recently and in the past 10 years. There are people who are not where they should be for various reasons. We need to take a census about that. Only if it can be based on the census, only if it is based on the list actually collected on the ground, will the voting list be correct. Therefore, I would like to say that we are taking the census work very seriously," Major General Zaw Min Tun said.
