With heavy rains and increasing river water levels, floods continue to occur in some areas in Kayin State including Hpa-an, according to local people and aid organizations.
According to the measurement made at 6.30am on August 6, the water level of the Thanlwin River is above 70 cm above the danger level in the town of Hpa-an, continuously causing floods in low-lying areas of the town.
In the town, nearly 1,000 people are now taking shelter in various places such as pagodas, monasteries, schools and cyclone shelters.
“The water level today is 820 cm down from 827 cm yesterday (August 5). But it is still above the danger level (750 cm). So, floods remain in the low-lying areas,” said a local resident in Hpa-an.
There have also been floods in Hlinebwe town of Kayin State following heavy rains, local sources said.
The water level of the Hlinebwe Creek has reached 1,018 cm, causing floods in the low-lying areas, a local resident said.
Over 1,000 flood victims are taking shelter in safer places in Hlinebwe.
According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the water level of the Thanlwin River is reaching 820 cm and is likely to hit 832 cm in twelve hours.
As floods spread to the low-lying areas of several other towns of Kayin State such as Kawkareik, Kyainseikkyi and Kyondoe, the Kawkareik Township Fire Services Department and local aid organizations are evacuating more people to safer places.
