Kawthaung had experienced record hit rainfall in 76 years, triggered landslide, flooding and collapsed of houses due to heavy rain and strong wind according to locals and data from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology of Kawthaung.
Kawthaung, which situates in southern part of Myanmar, experienced its heavy rain on July 18 and at the same time, faced strong wind in the sea. It recorded 9.96 inches - 253 mm of rainfall on July 18, the heaviest single day rainfall in 76 years. It surpassed the 9.13 inches - 232 mm rainfall recorded in July 30, 2021.
“We got heavy rain on July 18 and 19. It caused landslide, falling trees, collapsing of houses and flooding. Now the water has receded but it is forecast that there will be heavy rain in coming two days. Officials are helping those faced hardships because of heavy rain. Most of the cases of falling trees and collapsing of houses occurred mostly in Aye Yeik Nyein ward,” said a local of Kawthaung.
Fishing at sea is unable to continue during these days as Taninthayi Region has experienced heavy rain and strong wind. Small boats anchored at the coast were also swept away by flood or sank by the flood.
