Ammonia leakage occurred from a factory producing ice, owned by Yadanasu Company, in Ohtkyin Butayone Road in Hlaing Township at around 9:00 pm on January 12, and residents live nearby felt dizziness and fainted.

The leakage start occurred from around 9 pm and residents lived nearby are fainting due to the smell, according to charity organizations.

"Almost all the charity groups from Yangon have arrived because the plant is leaking ammonia, and people nearby are fainting. There are many people in the neighborhood who are fainting," said an official from the charity group who arrived at the scene.

A resident near the site said, "It started with ammonia gas coming from clean rainwater. At first, we could only hear the sound. There was no smell. Later, the smell spread and reached Malarmyaing 1st Street and 2nd Street. Now it has reached Malarmyaing 7th Street and 8th Street. From there, it has spread to Bata area. People from the ambulances told the people on the buildings to come down. Then they started to help. I started vomiting when I got the smell. I had to come down from my apartment and go to another place".

Charitable organizations from Yangon Region have arrived at the site and are conducting relief work.

Myanmar Fire Services Department announced initially that there was a report of an ammonia leakage from a factory producing ice in Ohtkyin Butayone Road, Ward 13 in Hlaing Township, Yangon Region and one fire truck from Hlaing Township fire station and one fire truck and one water bowser from Mayangone Township fire station are leaving there.

After that, one fire truck, one fire fighting vehicle and an ambulance from Kyauktada Township fire station, one administrative vehicle, one fire truck, one fire fighting vehicle, one search and rescue vehicle, two ambulances and one water bowser from headquarters of Myanmar Fire Services Department were arrived to the scene, it said.
