A grenade exploded at Japan Gyi Store near No.1 Friendship Bridge in Myawady, a border town with Thailand, at about 7pm on October 11, killing a young salesman, according to local sources.

A local resident said the bomb was thrown into the store owned by U Soe Naung and Daw San San Aye in Yuzuna Street, Ward No.1 in Myawady and exploded. 

“We didn’t know who threw it. We rashly looked outside only when an explosion was heard. We didn’t dare to go outside as it was dark. We learnt a person got hit. Shortly after the bomb explosion, police and authorities arrived at the scene,” he said. 

Maung Thiha, aged 18, nephew of Daw San San Aye, reportedly died of chest and stomach injuries.

In 2021 also, Japan Gyi Store faced a bomb attack. No one was hurt and only some objects were destroyed as the bomb exploded outside. 

 After the explosion, security forces, police and border guard force members have tightened security in the town of Myawady.
