The National League for Democracy (NLD) confirmed that they will not meet with the new Union Election Commission (UEC) formed by the State Administration Council (SAC).

MP Soe Lay from the NLD said they received an invitation letter from the UEC on February 23 to attend the meeting held on February 26.

“We will not attend the meeting as we don’t have people who can attend,” he said in a press conference held at NLD headquarters in Yangon on February 23.

Top leaders of the NLD including its chairperson and vice chairpersons were detained after the Tatmadaw seized power on February 1 and some leaders went into hiding.

When a reporter asked about his opinion on the new UEC, he said, “It is a military coup. The world doesn’t recognize it and they are too.”

The new UEC sent invitation letters to the political parties to hold a meeting on February 26.
