A melee occurred in Myeik of Taninthayi Region after two members of the local military security affairs unit attempted to arrest some local people coming back from the protest at gunpoint on February 22.

Local villagers said two members from the military security affairs unit including Than Win Aung threatened the residents coming back from the demonstration and went round to check the homes of lead protestors in Sonegaung ward, Kalwin village-tract.

Then, the local residents captured the two and seized two pistols, two magazines and some ammunition from them as they reportedly threatened the local people in public streets.

It was reported that some people from Kalwin village appointed by the administration council gave a tip-off to the unit and they pointed to the houses of the protestors triggering a melee.

However, Than Win Aung denied arrest attempts saying that they were only seeing land plots.

“We are coming here as we heard that land plots are on sale. Don’t you see there are land plots for sale? We didn’t mean to arrest the protestors. Please allow me to make a phone call,” Than Win Aung said. The situation returned to normal after some officials from the security unit came and negotiated with villagers. The seized guns and ammunition were returned to them.
