YANGON----As there has been misunderstanding about the government’s cash handout Ks 40,000, crowds occurred in some wards in eastern western parts of Hlaingthaya Township yesterday evening.

The news spread on social media that the residents from No.8 Ward and Shwelinpan Ward in eastern part of Hlaingthayar Township, Yangon Region, yesterday evening gathered in front of the houses of wards’ administrators as they didn’t get the government cash assistance on Ks 40,000.

“There have been crowds. But, it is just a moment. The township and ward administrators already settled the issues. Mainly, it is a misunderstanding,” said Police Major Khin Zaw from Hlaingthaya Township Police Force.

The Eleven Media Group tried to ask MPs Win Min and Win Maung from Hlaingthaya Township and No.1 Regional Parliament about the matters of the crowds but it failed.

“The crowds occurred in western part of Hlaingthaya Township concerning the Ks 40,000 cash assistance. I can’t answer the matters of the crowd from eastern part of Hlaingthaya Township. So, ask the relevant MP from No.1 Regional Parliament,” said MP Myat Min Thu from No.2 Regional Parliament.

Since COVID-19 hit Myanmar in March, the government has provided cash assistance for low-income families with village and ward administrators and lawmakers making lists of low-income families and distributing assistance.

Since May, the government has three times provided 20,000 kyats per household. This time, the government says it will provide 40,000 kyats, also covering those who did not previously receive assistance and those who were made redundant in the second wave of COVID-19.
