One of the 25 policemen who shouldered security duties when 42 illegal Bengali migrants were caught in Ayeyawady Region has tested positive for Covid-19, according to the Ministry of Health and Sports. 

All of the police from Batye Police Station in Kyankhin Township are in quarantine and one of them was reported to be infected with the virus. 

“Samples of the 25 policemen were tested and one has tested positive. He is a 43-year-old police lance corporal. They came here in a police car. He will be sent to Hinthada People’s Hospital,” said Dr Nyi Nyi Lwin, head of Hinthada District Public Health Department on the morning of September 7. 

One infected case was found after the samples of 138 people in quarantine at Hinthada University, Hinthada Technological University and Disaster Management Training School had been tested. 

“First, the laboratory produced the results, which were sent to Ayeyawady Region Public Health Department. Then, the department informed Hinthada. There is only one case in Hinthada. His health is in good condition, Dr Nyi Nyi Lwin said. 

The 42 Bengalis, four motorboat crew members and a navigator were arrested in the river near Hlinephone Village-tract, Mawlamyinekyun Township and Kyunthaya  Village-tract in Bogalay Township on August 27. 

One of the 42 Bengalis also tested positive for the virus and the remaining Bengalis have been transported back to Rakhine State.
