State Counsellor leaves for Netherlands to defend genocide lawsuit

YANGON- Myanmar State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi left for The Hague, Netherlands, yesterday morning to defend the case filed at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by Gambia on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), according to the announcement by the State Counsellor’s Office.

The ICJ will be carrying out the oral proceedings on Gambia’s report for the provisional measures on December 10th, 11th and 12th.

The State Counsellor Office reported that the State Counsellor, in her capacity as the Union Minister of the Foreign Affairs will contest this case to defend the national interest of Myanmar at the ICJ.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and party were seen off at the Nay Pyi Taw International Airport by Union Minister Min Thu, Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman Dr Myo Aung and wife, Chief of Myanmar Police Force Police Lt-Gen Aung Win Oo, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Myanmar Wouter Jurgens and embassy staff.

Union Minister for the Office of the State Counsellor Kyaw Tint Swe, Union Minister for International Cooperation Kyaw Tin and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the Union Attorney-General were accompanied as her[Suu Kyi] entourages.

The State Counsellor and her entourage were welcomed at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Thailand by Myanmar Ambassador Myo Myint and wife, Military Attache Brig-Gen Khin Zaw and embassy staff.

They will proceed onwards to Netherlands from Thailand.
