A total of 24 out of 2,464 dengue fever patients are died from January to September 21 in Yangon Region and high rates of infection occurred between five and nine years old children, according to Public Health Department for Yangon Region.

“Most of dengue fever cases are happened in Kachin State and Ayeyawady and Yangon regions. Up to 25 out of 3,649 dengue fever patients died last year. Most of the deaths are aged between five and nine years old. We are monitoring the situation. The infection of dengue fever is increased from mid June to September. Normally it is the time when the outbreak is high,” said Dr Nay Yee Yee Lin, project manager of dengue fever control project.

Dengue outbreak is increased significantly over the world including Myanmar and 112 out of 23,000 patients were died in 2018, according to the project.

At the present, most of the dengue fever outbreak occurred in Hlaing Thayar, Shwepyithar, Insein, Mingaladon, South Dagon, East Dagon, Thanlyin, Hlegu, Thaketa and Dagon Seikkan townships in Yangon Region and the outbreak is highest in Hlaing Thayar Township.

A total of 905 dengue fever patients were found in five-year period between 1955 and 1959 all over the world and it was increased to over two million patients annually after 2010. Myanmar found over 6,000 dengue fever patients from 1974 and 1976 and now it is increased to over 40,000 patients in 2015, according to figures from Ministry of Health and Sports.

According to a report from World Health Organization (WHO), the outbreak of dengue fever is significantly increased in world countries and Myanmar had 192 deaths and 31,288 patients in 2017. Up to 8 out of over 4,000 dengue fever patients were died in the first six months last year. The outbreak is increased annually in Myanmar, especially in Yangon and Ayeyawady regions and about 60 out of over 10,000 dengue fever patients died on average every year.
