About 10 homes have been evacuated with more set to move as a landslide about 2,000 feet in length and about 30 feet in width occurred by the bank of Hline river also called Myitmakha river in Hteingon Village, Moenyo Township, Thayawady District, Bago Region (West), according to local sources.
Home to over 170 houses, the village experiences landslides every year, and this year's landslide was the worst, local people said.
"Landslides are becoming worse. Our village had a small pagoda and a monastery. But they have been washed away. Now our village is newly built. Since about five years ago, about three or four homes collapsed every year following landslides. Most of the villagers are poor, they cannot buy a new home. Three or four homes have to be built in one single compound. I want to say that our village need to build an embankment to prevent river bank erosion," said a village.
"We are a couple alone here. We cannot afford to move out. About 10 homes have been moved to other places. I want to demand an embankment," said 60-year-old Myint Sein living near the river bank where the landslide occurred.
About 20 years ago, a pagoda and a monastery in the village were washed away by landslides. Since 2014, about five homes had to move every year.
