Ye Township electricity bills set to increase amid fuel shortages

The Rural Electrification Committee in Ye Township, Mon State, announced that starting in September 2024, electricity bills will be calculated at the rate of 2,100 Kyats per unit, an increase from the previous rate of 2,000 Kyats per unit.

The committee attributed the hike to fuel shortages and rising fuel prices.

Businesses and locals who rely on electricity are reportedly facing difficulties due to this increase.

A resident of Ye Township noted that electricity is now available from 6 am to 9 pm daily. "When the price of electricity went up, it became inconvenient to use electricity for cooking. Firewood and charcoal are also expensive and hard to come by, making cooking a challenge," the resident said.

Ye Township is the only one among the ten townships in Mon State that has yet to be connected to the national power grid. As a result, private power companies are supplying electricity using large generators.

Myat Thura Tun Company is distributing electricity to Ye town and several surrounding villages, while the Southern Myanmar Development (SMD) Company is providing power to Lamai town in the northern part of Ye Township and nearby villages.
