WFP’s special flight carrying medical supplies, experts arrives in Yangon

YANGON-Under the arrangement of the World Food Program (WFP), a special flight carrying experts and medical supplies which will be used to fight against COVID-19 in Myanmar arrived in Yangon Internal Airport via Malaysia on July 5th.

According to the State-run newspaper, “ Today, WFP’s flight number nine has landed in Yangon. With the recent government decree that has been extended until the end of July suspending international commercial flights, WFP flights continue to play an important role in linking Yangon with international connections. We are committed to continuing the operation until the commercial sector stands up on its feet again,” said Walid Ibrahim, WFP’s Deputy Country Director.

The newspaper also reported that on board the flight, which departed from Malaysia, were disinfectants and personal protection supplies to be used in WFP’s humanitarian operations and nine experts from different organizations including UN and ICRC in Myanmar.

However, international flight schedules were suspended at the Yangon International Airport, over 100 special flights including two domestic airlines, relief and cargo flights landed in Yangon, according to the announcement of Yangon International Airport.
