The State Administration Council (SAC) has agreed in principle to accept the demand of the United Wa State Party (UWSP) to grant them a “Wa” self-administered state, said SAC spokesperson Major General Zaw Min Tun.

He made the remark in response to a media question during a press conference of the SAC held in Nay Pyi Taw on June 1.

“When it comes to the Wa demand, we agree on it in principle,” Zaw Min Tun said.

After a meeting between SAC Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and the UWSP delegation led by the vice chairman on May 30, the Wa party issued a statement demanding the establishment of a Wa autonomous state.

Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun added that the military had already agreed in principle to grant more rights to Wa as well as other regions and states.

He quoted the constitution as saying that Myanmar is made up of 14 regions and states and that there are requirements for the establishment of self-administered zones and regions. Despite detailed provisions not included in the constitution, such a measure needs to be taken based on the facts discussed in drafting the constitution, he commented.

“We will adopt a union system based on democracy and federalism. To do so, we know the charter must be amended. So in principle, our military has agreed on that,” the SAC spokesperson said.
