The introducing ceremony of the United Nationalities Democracy Party (UNDP) will be held at the end of this month in Yangon, said its Chairman David Hla Myint.

“We will explain about the establishment of the party and the party participation in the upcoming election,” he said.

The venue and time are still discussing, he added.

The party will open its branches in all regions and states after the introducing ceremony is held and at the present, the party branch in Kayin State will be opened, he continued.

It was founded by members of 1990 Elected Candidates Group and most of the party patrons and leaders are the candidates who competed in 1990 multi-party democracy general elections.

The United National Democratic Organization (UNDO), the Union Ethnic Farmers Union and the Investigation Committee for the Human Rights Violation are included in the party, he said.

Khun Tun Oo, who is the chair of the 1990 Elected Candidates Group, will serve as a party leader and eight ethnics leaders will serve as patrons of the party.

Than Win, former MP of Thapaung Constituency in 1990 election will serve as vice-chairman 1 and writer Than Win Hlaing will serve as vice-chairman 2. Naw Ohn Hal will serve as secretary of the party.

David Hla Myint said they founded the party as they assume they cannot undertake to improve the country from outside of the parliament.

They applied for the party establishment in April 2019 and it was allowed in September. The party registration was granted in December.

At present, there are a total of 98 political parties including the UNDP.
