A revolver and six handsets were stolen from policemen that were asleep in a religious hall inside the compound of Meiktila Township police station on June 9 and senior police officers from the office of the Mandalay Region police force came to inspect the case, sources said.
Policemen from Wundwin, Thazi and Mahlaing townships in Meiktila district were on duty in Meiktila Township during the COVID-19 pandemic period and they slept inside the religious hall. A Sub-inspector kept his revolver and handset inside a laptop bag and slept inside the religious hall. The thief stole phones and laptop bags which included the gun, according to a local.
“The thief took five handsets and a laptop bag. He seemed not to know that the revolver was inside the laptop bag. The Sub-inspector slept after 2 am and other policemen slept later than him. The police are hunting down the thief. They thought the thief entered the building using the ladder through the window,” he said.
“Now the thieves are very daring. I don’t know why the arrests made by the police are not frightening them. I heard burglaries happening in town. Most thieves stole motorcycles and handsets. I am amazed that they dared to steal things from inside the compound of the police station. We need to be more careful from now on,” said Dr Win Soe Oo, Chair of NLD party in Meiktila.
The police lodged a complaint against the culprit under Pa 285/2020 of The Arms (Emergency Penalty held) Act and Section 380 of the Penal Code at Meiktila Township police station.
The Daily Eleven contacted Police Captain Tun Tun Win, head of the police station, on June 10 but he didn’t answer it.
