The wholesale prices of onion reach Ks.3200 per viss and retail prices reach Ks.4000 per viss ( a viss equals to 1.6 Kg) in early September according to onion traders.

Although the prices of onion still higher, there are few left in the onion farmers and less came to sell their onion due to instability in the region according to onion traders.

On September 3, small-sized onion fetched Ks.1900-Ks.2200, medium-sized onion fetched Ks.2300-Ks.2600 and large-sized onion fetched Ks.2700-Ks.3200 in Pakkoku onion market.

“It’s been a week the prices of onion was continued to rise. The onion market is steady. Some onion growers don’t want to sell their onion and keep stock in their hands hoping to get much higher prices. For the new onion to enter the market, three months still left. So, onion prices are likely to remain on the upward trend,” said an onion trader.

A man who grows monsoon onion plantation said that some onion farmers are already starting their cultivation. As the onion prices fetch good prices, there are many farmers who will grow onion in this rainy season in spite of high prices in saplings and fertilizers.

In 2020 to mid-2022, monsoon onion prices got under Ks.700 and as a result, onion farmers faced losses.

Onion prices   got higher since middle of this year due to instability in the onion planting areas according to sources.
