The Covid-19 virus spreading in Sittway of Rakhine State is likely to have originated from a market, said State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi urging those coming from Sittway to Yangon by air after August 16 to go to nearby health departments for testing.

The State Counsellor made the remark during her briefing on the latest developments of the Covid-19 situation in Rakhine State held on the night of August 24.

“Yangon must be vigilant. We estimate that the virus has started spreading since August 16 there. We have also learnt that after that day, some people have come from Sittway to Yangon by air. So, I urge them to contact nearby health departments for their testing. If necessary, they will receive treatment promptly. For public members also, they should inform such arrivals from Sittway. This is not an act of mischief. It should be done so for the sake of all,” State Counsellor commented.

Expressing thanks to the volunteers in Sittway, she said as the first batch of volunteers had arrived in Sittway to help, more are invited to go there and the government will cover their expenses.

According to the Ministry of Health and Sports, the ongoing virus in Sittway is likely to have started from a market. This is why people need to take care of themselves when they go to market.

The second wave of the Covid-19 has not come to Myanmar and it is only happening in Sittway only. So inclusive cooperation could prevent the second wave, she added.
