NAYPYITAW------Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) agreed to meet with the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Dr Aung Moe Nyo at the NLD’s office in Taunggyi Township, southern Shan State, today, says Sai Leik, SNLD’s spokesperson.

He also said that both parties held informal meetings before holding the official discussion.

Officials from NLD arrived at the SNLD headquarter in Yangon on January 7th. NLD team led by Dr Aung Moe Nyo who is currently Chief Minister of Sagaing Region met with a team led by Sai Kham Pai Pha, SNLD’s vice-chairman-2 on January 14th.

As the NLD’s team led by Dr Aung Moe Nyo had mentioned to ethnic political parties for holding discussions at the NLD’s relevant offices in States and Regions, the ethnic political parties in Mon and Kayah States failed to meet with the ruling NLD due to a disagreement over the meeting venue.

“We wanted to discuss national unity with the ruling NLD’s government. So, we agreed to hold a negotiation at NLD’s office,” said Sai Leik, SNLD’s general secretary.

Moreover, SNLD will suggest the ruling NLD for holding discussions with not only elected ethnic parties but also other ethnic political parties.

Three members led by SNLD's general secretary Sai Leik will be attending the NLD’s meeting.

Dr Aung Moe Nyo said that NLD’s team didn’t make any decisions coming out from the meetings with ethnic political parties. But, they would submit the comments of the ethnic political parties to the NLD’s CEC members.

SNLD believes that the national reconciliation must be implemented if NLD’s team would report the meeting minutes to the NLD’s top leaders.

The SNLD won 42 seats in the 2020 general election.

The team led by Dr Aung Moe Nyo also met with the representatives from winning ethnic political parties: Pa-O National Organization ,Ta’ang National Party and Kayan National Party as well as the Independent Kachin ethnic affairs minister on January 13th and 14th separately.
