A Singaporean police officer has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the torture and death of a Myanmar maid in Singapore, Channel News Asia reported.
The perpetrators in the case were the officer’s wife and his mother-in-law, who had already been sentenced to prison.
The officer had been suspended from duty for a long time, and the Myanmar maid who was tortured died on July 26, 2016, after months of torture.
The 24-year-old Myanmar maid suffered injuries to her neck and head and weighed just 24 kilograms at the time of her death.
The convicted police officer, Kevin Chelvan, was found guilty of four charges.
The officer was charged with causing bodily harm to the Myanmar maid, aiding and abetting the torture committed by his wife, providing false information to the police officer in charge, and destroying CCTV installed in the apartment where the crime was committed to attempt to destroy evidence.
“He had the opportunity to prevent the abuse but he did not do so,” the judge said.
The judge noted that the police officer had not given the maid enough food for about 35 days before her death.
The former police officer, who was sentenced to prison, had asked the court to extend his bail, saying he wanted to give his children time.
The police officer’s ex-wife was sentenced to 30 years in prison and his mother-in-law to 20 years in prison for abusing the Myanmar maid, Channel News Asia reported.
