Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) decided not to register, it is reported.

Concerning the decision, The Daily Eleven contacted responsible officials from the SNLD but no contact has been made till now.

According to the new political parties’ registration law enacted by SAC, political parties continue to establish must registered within 60 days of the law enacted. The new law was enacted on January 26, 2023. Therefore, March 26 will be the 60th day where March 25 and March 27 are public holidays and so March 28 is the final date for political parties’ registration, it said.

In accordance with the interview with Shan Herald News Agency by SNLD party general secretary U Sai Leik on the party’s decision on not to register, it is reported that the decision was made at the SNLD party’s central committee meeting held on the March 16 and March 17.

In an interview with the Shan Herald News Agency, Sai Leik said that we discussed whether we should register or not at the meeting. According to the decision of CEC, we decided that our party will not register within 2 months. Therefore, we decided not to register.

One of the reasons the party chose not to register is that responsible officials didn’t mention the specific date for the holding the election according to his interview with the Shan Herald News Agency.

Without announcing the date, political parties are instructed to register in advance. I think, it is not the proper way to do so. In a time when things need to be settled, we have to think what we should do as a political party, he said in the interview.

According to the statement issued by the Union Election Commission, there are 29 political parties applied for registration till March 17.
