Under the guidance of the President Office, a scrutinising committee will be formed to look over 90 acres of natural floating island in Mongthauk, Nyaungshwe Township, Shan State, the proposal submitted by Myanmar Naing Groups.

“With the instruction of the President Office and the order of Shan State Government, the scrutinising committee is formed with the deputy commissioner of Taunggyi District General Administration, the deputy administrator of Nyaungshwe Township, U Sein Tun of the Natural Environment and Animals Conservation Department. The committee will begin launching investigation into 90 acres of natural floating inland in Nyaungshwe,” said Kyaw Zaw Hla, deputy commissioner of Taunggyi District General Administration.

“The committee is formed to look into Mongthauk. Tomorrow we will make a field trip to Mongthauk. We have complaints and therefore we will go on an inspection tour to Mongthauk. We will have to observe the measurements. In the past, there was no permission. We will have to launch an investigation since there are complaints,” said Deputy Commissioner Kyaw Zaw Hla, Taunggyi District General Administration.

“The scrutinizing committee was formed to look over the problem. When we finish investigation, we will give some remarks. We are three-member committee. We will give a report after looking into the lowest part of the problem,” said Shan State MP Khin Maung Win.

The residents said that the situation of 90 acres of natural floating island will return to normal soon.

Tun Naing Shwe, son of former Senior General Than Shwe, proposed to build hotels the 90 acres wide of natural floating island belonging to the Department of Forestry. But the residents rejected the proposal by delivering petitions. Under the instruction of the President Office, we will re-scrutinise the proposal with the order of Shan State.

On behalf of the Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism, the letter signed by the deputy permanent secretary showed that there was no proposal to build hotels on 90 acres wide of natural floating island.

The 90 acres wide of natural floating island should be kept as sanctuary. If so, it will help conserve Inlay lake, and ecosystems and biodiversities in the swamp region. The residents will be able to cooperate in the conservation of natural environment. Ohn Win, Minister for Resources and Natural Environment, himself supported the plan to change the natural floating island into sanctuary. The minister sent a letter to resources and natural environment committee of the parliament.

Two Shan State MPs and a Lower House MP objected to the proposal to build hotels the 90 acres wide of natural floating island.
