
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, current rotating chair of ASEAN, met with Myanmar’s State Administration Council Chairman and Prime Minister, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, on April 17 in Bangkok, Thailand. The meeting took place at the Rosewood Ploenchit Hotel, according to reports from several Thai news agencies.
Also present at the meeting was former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who currently serves as the Malaysian Prime Minister’s special advisor on ASEAN affairs. The venue was reportedly under tight security, with media barred from entry.
According to a statement released by Myanmar’s State Administration Council’s Information Team at 8 pm on April 17, discussions during the meeting included ongoing ASEAN cooperation to support Myanmar’s recovery from recent earthquakes, as well as broader ASEAN-Myanmar collaboration efforts.In addition to humanitarian support, issues related to a potential ceasefire in Myanmar were also expected to be discussed, according to sources close to the Malaysian government, as reported by the BBC.
