Rice sold for 200 Yuan per 50 kg bag in Laukkai

Rice was sold for 200 Chinese Yuan (around 100,000 kyats in Myanmar currency) per bag containing 50 kilogram on November 7 at the office of Kokang Self-Administered Zone in Laukkai, according to the zone’s information department.

In some parts of Kokang region, armed conflicts have blocked transportation routes from across the country, resulting in food shortages. With the help of China to meet the basic food and shelter needs of the local people, the second batch of rice purchased by the self-administered zone has arrived.

The sale was organized by the zone’s administration council.  Then, the zone’s fund raising and maintenance committee sold a total of 33 tons of rice to the public members.  A bag of rice containing 50 kg was sold for of 200 Yuan.

At the time of the sale of the rice that arrived in the first batch, it was reported that some people made a profit from reselling their rice bought a cheaper price. The case is being investigated and if it is true, the authorities will take drastic action against them. For that, a warning has already been issued to prevent public panic.

The information department also reported that the self-administered zone has capability to fulfill daily needs of food, and later will purchase fruit, vegetables and other daily essentials for the people.
