A 65-year-old retired lecturer was murdered at her flat in a busy community near Kabaraye Bus Stop in Mayangon Township, Yangon, on the evening of June 11, local sources said.

At about 4pm, the nephew of the slain woman arrived back home at building No.301/b on Kabaraye Pagoda Road in Ward No.9, Mayangon Township, to find the door slightly open and the flat in a mess inside. After he had asked for help, officials from Myanmar Kyelphyu Social Development Charity Organization and heighbours went into the flat and checked. 

“When we entered the flat, we found everything in a mess such as chairs collapsed and glasses broken. When we checked the room of the retired lecturer, she was found dead lying on her side. Her hands were tied up. As she was murdered with injuries, we contacted authorities. We learnt that a mobile phone and a laptop were taken away,” said an official from the charity organization.

The old lady was Daw Nyunt Nyunt Sein, a retired lecturer of Myanmar language from Yangon Education College.

“The woman who died was living at her flat together with her nephew. Her hands were tied with a napkin and a phone charger cable. There were wounds to the head. A phone and a laptop belonging to her nephew were taken away. We don’t know yet if other things were taken. Investigation is underway after checking CCTV records from nearby areas. We have opened a murder case,” said an officer from Yangon Region Police Force. 

Mayangon Police Station is handling the case and taking measures to hunt for suspects.
