Regular sessions of the third parliament in 10 regions and states across Myanmar are scheduled to commence on February 8 or 9, according to statements released by respective parliaments.

The parliaments of Yangon, Mandalay, Sagaing, Bago, Ayeyawady and Magway regions will start their regular parliamentary sessions on February 9.

Shan State and Kayah states are due to start their third parliamentary sessions on February 8 and Mon and Kachin states on February 9.

“When parliament is called, we choose chair and elect speaker and deputy speaker. But I have yet to know other matters,” said Than Naing Oo, representative of Yangon Region Parliament for Pabedan Township Constituency (1).

A coordination meeting took place at Yangon Region Parliament building on January 18 discussing preparations for successfully holding the regular sessions of the upcoming third parliament.

The parliaments of Chin, Kayin and Rakhine states and Taninthayi Region have not announced the commencement of sessions of the third parliament till the evening of January 18.

As per the 2008 constitution, region/state parliaments’ terms will expire as the same time that of the lower house of parliament. The second term of those parliaments will expire on January 31.

Those parliaments must call regular parliamentary sessions 15 days after the third term comes.
