The earthquake destroyed a six-story building and a five-story building at the Yadanar Theingi Education Center in Thawtapang Ward, Sagaing Hill, killing 16 people, sources said.

"Our school is located on the Sagaing Hill and Minwun Hill. It is located on an earthquake fault. When the earthquake started, it collapsed. There was no time to do anything. There was no time to run. At that time, a total of 16 people including students and families of displaced people died. Four are being treated at Mandalay General Hospital for injuries. One of them had to have his leg amputated. Now, donations are coming in but we still don't have water," said the head of the education center.

The Yadanar Theingi Education Center is home to 736 students from KG to Grade 12, as well as many displaced people. The collapsed buildings are currently being cleared, and the goal is to open the education center with a roof made of palm trees in the upcoming June.

"Students will be accepted back in six months. Then we have to rebuild the living quarters. Now the cleaning has started. I don't know how long it will take. What is needed are teaching aids and school-related items. Right now, there are no large donations for the reconstruction. There are donations ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 kyats to two million kyats. Right now, we are thinking of small palm-leaf huts and bamboo slats. They are cool and safe. We have planned for those. If there are too many people, we will have to plan for buildings that can withstand wind and rain," she said.

The strong earthquake that struck on March 28 caused extensive damage to the downtown area of Sagaing, and caused damage and deaths to religious buildings, pariyatti schools, and monasteries in the Sagaing Hill.
