Inflation rates in Myanmar have shown significant fluctuations over recent years. During the first quarter of the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the average inflation rate reached a high of 28.59%, based on data from the Central Statistical Organization. This reflects a sharp increase from the first quarter of the 2022-2023 fiscal year, during which the annual inflation rate was 18.45%, and the year-on-year inflation rate stood at 18.46%. In the second quarter of 2022-2023, the annual inflation rate surged to 27.98%, with a year-on-year rate of 28.04%.
The inflation trend peaked in the third quarter of 2022-2023, where the average inflation rate rose to 34.97%, and the year-on-year rate mirrored this at 34.97%. However, the fourth quarter saw some relief, with the average inflation rate dropping to 27.51%, and the year-on-year rate stabilizing at 27.50%.
Efforts to calculate and adapt inflation rates have been ongoing. In 2012, the Central Statistical Organization conducted a comprehensive household income and consumption survey involving 32,669 households across 82 townships. This data laid the groundwork for inflation measurements. Currently, inflation calculations are based on 2017 as the baseline year, according to the Ministry of Planning and Finance.
Inflation data from 2021 to 2022 provides further insight into the rapid changes in consumer prices. In February 2021, the average inflation rate was 2.61%. By March, it slightly decreased to 2.28%, before beginning a steady rise. By December 2021, the rate had reached 6.22%. This upward trend continued in 2022, with February recording an inflation rate of 8.35%, and by June, it had increased to 12.93%. These numbers demonstrate a consistent rise in inflation over the period.
During the 2021-2022 fiscal year, inflation rates also varied across quarters. From October to December 2021, the average inflation rate was 11.39%, with the year-on-year rate identical at 11.39%. The following quarter, from January to March 2022, saw the average inflation rate climb to 15.05%, while the year-on-year inflation rate rose slightly to 15.06%.
