Daw Nwe Oo, the headmistress of the primary school in Takay Chaung Phya Village, Kim Moon Chaung Village Tract, Kyaikto Township, Mon State, was shot dead by unknown gunmen on the afternoon of February 23, according to locals.

The village is located in the south-east of the Kim Moon Chaung Village. Four armed men on two motorcycles arrived at the school at about 12:15 pm on February 23 and took her away, a local said.

He continued, "According to the report that the school principal was taken away by armed men, the security forces followed them and found her lying dead with gunshot wounds near the village cemetery."

She had a gunshot wound on her left forearm, three gunshot wounds in the left arm, three gunshot wounds in the left chest, two gunshot wounds in the left abdomen, one gunshot wound in the left scrotum, resulting in a total of ten gunshot wounds, and her body was taken to the Kyaikto Township Hospital by ambulance from a social assistance association.

"Her husband passed away not long ago due to ill health. Now that she has passed away and there are only two children left," he added.

It is for the first time that an education staff was killed in Mon State after February 1, 2021. It is not yet known which organization shot her and for what reason.

Similarly, a monk was shot dead at a wayside public rest house at the top of Kyu Chaung Village in Kyaikto Township, Mon State on the morning of January 26 and it is also the first time a monk has been killed in Mon State since February 1.
