Police is hunting down a person supposedly the owner of the ID card of that proves he is a Second Lieutenant from Mon peace and defence front in relation to a shooting at the corner of Thura U Sitt Maung and Thamain Bayan roads in Mawlamyaing on October 14, said Police Lt-Col Thein Tun Oo, head of Mawlamyaing district police force.

“The culprit shot a corporal from the traffic police force and a civilian. They were injured. The shooter left a woman on his car and ran away. We learnt that the person who shot them is Naing Pike Htwe, Second Lieutenant from Mon peace and defence front based in Kawkareik. The police are hunting him down now,” said the Police Lt-Col.

“We are still scrutinizing his identity card and will take appropriate action against him whether the identity card is genuine or fake,” he said.

The incident occurred when a car was flagged down by Corporal Myo Zaw Oo and Lance Corporal Thet Ko Oo at Daungzayat traffic lights but the driver didn’t stop his car. So they gave chase after it with a motorcycle and forced the car to stop at the corner of Thura U Sitt Maung and Thamain Bayan roads. The car crashed into them, the driver shooting about five times at the traffic police afterwards. Corporal Myo Zaw Oo sustained an injury on his left cheek and the shrapnel from the bullets accidentally ricocheted off and hit Aye Min Khant, who was driving by with his motorcycle on the other side of the road. The driver then ran away on foot, according to police records.

The police interrogated Aye Mon, who was left on the car, and she confessed that the driver, who is still at large, is Second Lieutenant Naing Pike Htwe from Mon peace and defence front.

Naing Yaung, leader of Mon peace and defence front, denied that the fugitive was not a member of his force.

“We returned to being a legitimate organization on October 26 2010 and at that time, I was a battalion commander. The culprit is not one of us and we are helping the authorities hunt him down. We have never seen Naing Pike Htwe before. I’ve seen his identity card. I don’t know him and I’ve never saw him before. Superior officers, all of us, know all of the lower-ranked members under us. I managed relations and business affairs of the organization. We will also sue him for impersonation if he is caught,” said Naing Yaung.

The police lodged a complaint against Naing Pike Htwe under Section 333 and 307 of the Penal Code and Aye Mon under Section 114 of the Penal Code at Myaing Thayar police station.
