Pilgrim influx to Bagan fails to revive hotel industry

Despite an increase in pilgrims visiting the World Heritage Site of Bagan in Nyaung U Township, Mandalay Region, many hotels remain closed, according to local business operators.

The COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing political crisis forced around 70% of hotels and restaurants in the Bagan region to shut down. Although pilgrims visit during holidays and major festivals, most businesses operate only part-time, depending on demand. While restaurants have reopened during the peak tourist season, many hotels and guesthouses continue to struggle, operating irregularly or remaining closed.

“In the past, December would see hotels in Bagan fully booked. Now, even during holidays like Thadingyut and Tazaungdaing, hotels must assess demand before accepting guests. Many have remained closed since the pandemic began,” said a hotelier from Nyaung U.

Most visitors to the ancient cultural site are day trippers from nearby townships. Although some travelers book accommodations in advance for Christmas and New Year, a significant number of hotels have permanently shut down.
