The People’s Party held its election campaign rally in Mandalay today, according to reports.
The event took place at the Futsal Ground on 30th Street, between 55th and 56th Streets in Chan Aye Tharzan Township in Mandalay Region. At the gathering, the party introduced its candidates and encouraged the public to vote in the upcoming election.
People’s Party Chair U Ko Ko Gyi also attended the rally. During his campaign speech, he explained the importance of the election and the concept of separation of powers:
“To put it simply so that people understand: imagine one person decides everything—telling others what to do and what not to do—then that same person punishes them, and that same person decides what is right or wrong. This is what we call the three branches of power in very basic terms.
In political terms, making laws is legislative power. When those laws are enforced, punishing someone for breaking them is judicial power. And telling you how you must or must not act after being sentenced is executive power. When all three powers are held by one person, after the election, what we see are ministers, a president, and others—but in reality, the most important institution in the country is the legislature. The administration must operate according to what the legislature defines, without overstepping it.
So, how important is the election? It is about changing from a system where one person issues orders, arrests, and governs alone, to a system where that person must act strictly within the laws passed by the legislature. That means there will be limits—controls—on their power. That is extremely important.
This election is therefore about moving from a centralized, one-person or one-group decision-making system toward a system that practices separation of powers,” he said, urging public support for the party’s candidates.
Representing Chan Aye Tharzan Township, Daw Naw Win Pa Pa Oo will contest as a Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) candidate; U Maung Maung Latt as an Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) candidate; Daw Zin Zin Win as a Region/State Hluttaw candidate; and Nan Khin Thaw Tar Soe as the candidate for the Shan ethnic affairs seat.
