People will no longer vote in coming general election in the interests of a party as they have improved their political awareness, National League for Democracy Vice Chairman (2) Dr Zaw Myint Maung warned in meeting with the party members.

The seventh tripartite meeting involving Yangon Region NLD, parliament and government took place at Sky Star Hotel in Yangon on October 24.

"The State Counsellor urged people not to look at individual persons but to look at a party for casting votes. People really voted for it. But their political awareness has increased gradually. Unlike in the past, they will not look at one single party. So, our parliamentary representatives need to nurture and improve themselves," he commented.

Yangon Region NLD Chairman Myint Htay also said the remark that votes should be cast in one party's interests is not enough for the election to be held in 2020.

"But it is also necessary to look at parties. We need to observe how they worked. Moreover, it is necessary to assess the quality of individual candidates," Myint Htay said.

Those who chaired the meeting also called for unity among party members.

NLD Central Executive Committee members and the Yangon NLD chairman called on party members to be united to maintain previous election results in Yangon Region, commercial capital of Myanmar, where NLD is headquartered and most foreign embassies are located.

"So long as we are united within our party, we cannot worry about outside disturbances. People stand by us. But unity is important," NLD CEC Secretariat member Nyan Win said.

Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein and Yangon Region Parliament Speaker Tin Maung Tun also made opening speeches before the meeting.
