A total of 27 million out of 38 million eligible voters came to cast vote in 2020 general election and it is over 70 per cent of total eligible voters, said Hla Thein, Chair of the Union Election Commission (UEC) during a press briefing with state media.

The interview was reported in state owned newspaper issued on November 17.

“The number of voters came to cast vote is over 70 per cent and it is the number of voters we don’t have before,” he said.

The news about the number of voters is over 39 million are wrong, he said.

Some accounts in social media pointed out using photos that a letter was spread around in social media that the number of voters, who came to cast vote in Tonzan, Chin State, is more than the number of eligible voters and there is a big gap between the number of votes and the number of eligible voters in some townships. They also pointed out that the number of votes and the number of eligible voters in Thaketa Township posted by MP Naing Ngan Lin from Thaketa Constituency is big.

Chin State election sub-commission clarified that the difference between the number of votes and the number of eligible voters in Tonzan is a mistake in Microsoft Excel in the computer system. Chair of the Thaketa Township election sub-commission said the difference between the number of votes and the number of eligible voters in Thaketa may be calculated by the party and it was not announced by the UEC.

However the UEC didn’t say about the number of military personnel and their families in the eligible voter list.

According to the announcement made by the UEC, the number of eligible voters and the number of voters who came to cast the vote in this election is more than those in previous elections.

In 2015 general election, there were over 34 million eligible voters and over 23 million of them came to cast the vote. In 2010 general election, there were over 29 million eligible voters and over 22 million of them came to cast the vote, according to the UEC.

All of the names of the candidates are announced and complaint about election disputes and frauds can be made to the UEC within 45 days, he said.

“We don’t have any complaint letter till now,” he said.

It will be the decision of the people to have the equal ratio in election result and people desire. The election is successfully held as voters from Myanmar and our citizens living in oversea countries cast vote earnestly and dutifully, he said.
