Swabs of about 2,000 people at Thabarwa Center in Thanlyin Township, Yangon Region, were tested and over 400 had been infected with Covid-19, Township Covid-19 Prevention, Control and Treatment Committee chairman Aung Ko Tun told The Daily Eleven on November 18.

Thabarwa Center is a non-profit organization housing and caring for elderly people, ailing people and abandoned elderly people.

The infection was first found on October 23 and then more than 22 people in close contact with the first patient tested positive for the coronavirus.

The center has over 3,000 people and nearly 2,000 underwent Covid-19 testing with rapid test kits. And there had been 403 people who tested positive for Covid-19 from October 23 to November 18.

“Till today, there have been 403 cases. The first case was found on October 23. It was the person who regularly went to Yangon General Hospital because of illness. Then tests were carried out on those in close contact. Twenty two more tested positive. Gradually, the number of confirmed cases has reached 403. The center has over 3,000 people. About 2,000 had tests. Now, movement restrictions are imposed at the center,” said Aung Ko Tun.

Now, the center has put the infection under control, he said.

“Previously, when we had swabs of 400 people tested, about 80 were found to be infected. About 70 tested positive when we tested 300 people. Now we have found only about 20 cases when we tested 400 people. So we could have controlled it to a certain degree. With the help of the regional government, we have a plan today to provide over 1,000 bags of rice, cooking oil, gram and salt,” he added.
