Over 3000 Myanmar citizens abroad brought home by relief flights: MOFA

YANGON-Over 3000 Myanmar citizens living abroad, facing difficulties, have been carried back by relief flights, according to the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) issued on June 5th.

The MOFA said that a Special Aircraft arranged by Amelia Airlines, based in Paris, flew back 83 Myanmar seamen from France, Italy and Netherlands on June 7th.

Likewise, a relief flight of Myanmar Airways International carried back 99 citizens from the Republic of Korea, 34 citizens from Canada and the United States, totaling 133 persons on Friday evening after they were stranded in these countries due to suspension of International flights due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are now a total of 3,192 Myanmar citizens being carried back by relief flights, says MOFA.

The Ministry of Defence also sent a relief flight to carry back 41 Myanmar citizens stranded in Nepal on June 5th.

On arrival at the Yangon International Airport, officials from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population, the Ministry of Health and Sports, and the Yangon Region Government Committee helped for their 21-day quarantine period in line with the regulations of immigration and medical checks.

Myanmar is also in negotiations with Thailand to bring back Myanmar citizens from Thailand via No.2 Myawady Friendship Bridge. There are around 20,000 Myanmar citizens carried back from Thailand from May 1st to June 7th.

Among returnees from abroad, mostly returnees from India had tested positive for COVID-19. So far, Myanmar has seen 243 COVID-19 confirmed cases, six deaths and 156 recoveries, according to the Ministry of Health and Sports.
