One suicide attempt reported every two days in Ayeyawady

From 2017 to September, 2019, there were 511 reported suicide attempts in Ayeyawady Region, according to the region police force. 

In 2017, 199 out of 1,047 death cases were suicide cases. In 2018, 178 out of 921 death cases related to suicide cases. Till September, this year, 133 out of 640 death cases were linked to suicide cases. One suicide case is reported every two days, according to the police record. 

Deputy Police Colonel Tun Shwe of Ayeyawady Region Police said: “Suicide is associated with mental illness, alcohol, economic and social problems.”

In Myanmar, the number of those aged between 25 and 40, who commit suicide is the highest. In 2010, one in 100,000 people who committed suicide died. In 2016, three in 100,000 people who committed suicide died, according to the Ministry of Health and Sports. 

Suicide by hanging accounts for 71.3 per cent of suicide cases, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
